Dinner at 8

As you might have expected, I did in fact get lost driving home after my trip but I did stumble upon a gem in the process.

I was listening to Graham Norton's Saturday radio show, (he's so funny,) and his guest chose a Rufus Wainwright song to be played.  The story goes the Rufus' Dad left the family home when Rufus was a boy and the relationship had been somewhat strained ever since.  The grown up Rufus, now a successful singer/songwriter in his own right had given an interview to Rolling Stone magazine in which he had a dig at his Dad.  Rufus duly pointed the interview out to Dad one night at dinner and a huge bust up ensued.  Rufus wrote, "Dinner at 8" in response to the fallout.

I thought it was an amazing piece.  I swiftly turned to my trusted YouTube but sadly, the only options available are pretty grainy.  Keane did a version which is great but didn't have the passion of Mr W so, here, for you and anyone who wants to partake in a passionate masterpiece is Mr Rufus Wainright's; "Dinner at 8."  I'm adding the lyrics due to the graininess of the recording.  Hope you enjoy.

No matter how strong
I'm gonna take you down
With one little stone
I'm gonna break you down
And see what you're worth
What you're really worth to me

Dinner at eight was okay
Before the toast full of gleams
It was great until those old magazines
Got us started up again
Actually it was probably me again

Why is it so
That I've always been the one who must go
That I've always been the one told to flee
When it fact you were the one long ago
Actually in the drifting white snow
You left me

So put up your fists and I'll put up mine
No running away from the scene of the crime
God's chosen a place
Somewhere near the end of the world
Somewhere near the end of our lives

But 'til then no, Daddy, don't be surprised
If I wanna see the tears in your eyes
Then I know it had to be long ago
Actually in the drifting white snow
You loved me

No matter how strong
I'm gonna take you down
With one little stone
I'm gonna break you down
And see what you're worth
What you're really worth to me
